13 April 2016 is a very special day for parents of Ximena and Scarlett Hernandez-Torres.
Their 10-month old pair of twins, who were conjoined at the waist and sharing a colon and bladders were successfully separated by surgeons in Texas, USA! The surgery took about 12 hours.
What is even more unique about this pair of twins is that they are actually part of a identical triplet birth!
They have a triplet sister named Catalina who was born without any serious health issues.
This chance of a triplet birth with twins is believed to be only one in 50 million!
In order to carry out this surgery, a team of doctors including specialists from Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology and prepared for months! This is a complex and intricate surgery.
(Paediatric means for children- a doctor for children is called a paediatrician; Plastic Surgery is usually done to improve appearance by operating on skin and bones, Urology is the medical science that deals with the urinary system in humans)
The twins are recovering well, and they will remain in the hospital till they fully recover.
