Are these tasty delights any healthier over decades?
Fast food has been around for a long time now. And many studies over the years have shown that fast food is not healthy. So, what’s different about the fast food your parents ate when they were your age? A new study has been conducted on fast food in the United State of America. Researchers led by Alice H Lichtenstein from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Centre of Ageing studied the menu at three national fast food chains. Under the microscope went 27 food items including small, medium and large fries, cheeseburgers and a grilled chicken sandwich. Among beverages, they studied colas. If you notice, they chose foods that are often ordered together. They found that while the portions remain the same, the number of calories, the amount of salt and harmful saturated fats have remained the same since 1996. All these levels were far too high for our good. The only good news is that the level of harmful trans fats in fries has gone down. So, if we eat fast foods regularly, they can make us fat and unhealthy. Just one meal of a cheeseburger, fries and a cola drink is much more than half the calories one should eat in a day.
