Frozen poop pills advised for patients
Just imagine. They take some other human's poop, freeze it, put it into capsules- and ask patients to eat it to cure them. Sounds gross right? Well, it is for a good cause. Many people suffer from the deadly Clostridium difficile infection that attacks their intestines. The only good cure is that bacteria from good poop are introduced into their intestine. This healthy poop will then 'activate' the functioning of their intestines and they can get cured of this infection. Iit has been found that just two days of the treatment can cure a dangerous infection that kills thousands of people per year.Scientists say the pills, which contain filtered, healthy fecal matter (poop), offer a cheap, convenient and safer way to get the healthy poop inside the intestine of the patient. The pills, created by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA, start with stool (poop) from healthy donors in a saline solution. The contents are filtered to extract helpful bacteria, and this mixture is then piped into pill capsules and subsequently frozen. Patients pop the pills straight out of the freezer, where they can be stored for up to 250 days.
