RARE EARTHQUAKE
Thailand was struck by an earthquake on May 5, 2014. It had a magnitude of 6.0, which is considered strong.

The earthquake rattled northern Thailand, not far from the town of Chiang Rai. It was felt even in the capital, Bangkok, which is 800 kilometres away. Tall buildings shook for many seconds. So far, one person has been killed and many more were hurt. Windows were broken and buildings damaged. Myanmar, a neighbouring country, felt the earthquake too.

Major earthquakes are rare in Thailand, but ground tremors often strike the northern part of the country. The May 5 earthquake took place on the Phayao fault line and officials are checking how bad the damage is.
