Internet for Everyone!
Imagine being able to use the Internet wherever you are in the world? Well soon you just might be able to do so if a plan launched earlier this week by Facebook and other technology giants is successful! NEW YORK CITY, August 2013 (AFP/The Whiz Times). The project is called Internet.org and its goal is to give Internet access to five billion people by making it easier and cheaper to connect to the Web.
Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect. The other partners in the project are Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung, Qualcomm, MediaTek and Opera, while Twitter and LinkedIn are also due to sign up. Today around 2.7 billion people, just over a third of the world's population, have access to the Internet. The number of new users is growing very slowly each year. The goal of Internet.org is to make Internet access available to the two-thirds of the world who are not yet connected. How will the project do this? They want to simplify mobile apps to make them work better and improve telephone networks so they perform better while consuming less energy. They also want to develop lower-cost, higher-quality smartphones that people can easily afford to buy and use.
