No loss of lives, but fears of tsunami remain due to Peru earthquake
A major 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Peru on Sunday, August 25th.
Thankfully, there were no immediate reports of any major damage or losses of life.
The quake hit at 11:21 PM near the town of Tambo. In the city of Avacucho, the earthquake was felt with high force.
As the quake happened, people in the city of Ayacucho panicked and ran out on the streets.
In the capital, however, the quake was felt as a 4.4-magnitude occurrence -- noticed by residents of highrises but not those out and about in the sprawling city of eight million.
Officials also warned that quakes of this size "sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the center of the earthquake."
Officials are taking care and trying to mange the situation.
