"Selfie" is Oxford Dictionary's new word of the year
COULD THIS WORD BE IN YOUR NEXTÂ SPELLING LIST?
On November 19, 2013, Oxford Dictionary named "Selfie" the new word of the year. The word is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website."
Today's technology has made it easier for selfies to be taken. The selfie-taker can check his or her own image in the camera before clicking the button. Unlike analog cameras (cameras that use photographic film), bad photographs taken by a digital camera device can be erased easily and replaced by better ones.
It is believed that the word "selfie" first appeared in an Australia website in September 2002. It kept a relatively low profile for years after that. In 2012, the word started being used a lot and ended up climbing to its global fame.
