Cambridge University will get a Lego professor
A Lego professor, seriously?! Indeed, ‘everything is awesome’, including the news that one of the UK’s most prestigious institutions – Cambridge University – is getting a Lego professor.
The university recently announced that the school has accepted 2.5 million pounds (or about 5.3 million Singapore dollars) from the Lego foundation to set up a Lego Professorship of Play in Education, Development and Learning.
The Lego foundation also donated to the school an additional 1.5 million pounds (roughly 3.2 million Singapore dollars) to set up a Research Centre on Play in Education, Development and Learning within its Faculty of Education.
One lucky Professor of Play will start the new role on October 1, 2015. There is no word yet on whether the Cambridge students taking this course can spend their days building the Lego Starship Enterprise, rather than slaving over books on how to incorporate play into education and learning!
The Lego Foundation is a Danish association that owns 25% of the Lego Group. The foundation strives to re-imagine and redefine learning and play for children aged 0 to 12. It wants to change the way people understand the importance of play.
Many scientists believe that play is important to a child’s development in all aspects. In fact when children are asked about what they think is important in their lives, playing and friends are usually at the top of the list.
Not that this Whiz Times writer is encouraging all of you to forget about studying! But it will not hurt to put aside the books every now and then and just enjoy some play outdoors!
