A TOUGH & DANGEROUS JOB

Goose barnacles are a very special Christmas treat. People pay lots of money to buy them for their juicy flesh. It is not easy to catch them though. In Spain, barnacle pickers have to be very careful not to get washed out to sea by rough waves while picking barnacles. When the tide is low, barnacle pickers go out to the rocks at sea where barnacles can be found. They have only two hours to pick barnacles before the tide comes in again. Barnacle pickers need to be skillful enough to pick the biggest and best barnacles. But they are not allowed to pick more than four kilogrammes of barnacles per person per trip. As the Christmas season approaches, they are allowed to pick one extra kilogramme of barnacles. Put on your thinking caps: Why do you think these men are willing to do such dangerous jobs?
