Video: Trawling ban in Hong Kong
LEAVE THE FISH ALONE
The fishing industry in Hong Kong used to be a very lively one. But now, trawling is no longer allowed in Hong Kong waters.
Trawling is a way of catching fish by dragging a net along the sea bottom. It has been banned for two reasons. The first reason is that the Hong Kong government wants to stop the number of fish from becoming too little. The second reason is to protect the sea bed.
Hong Kong's fishing communities used to live on their fishing boats with their families. Today, they live in villages on land. With the trawling ban, fishermen now have to find new ways to earning money. Some take tourists out to sea to look at dolphins while others teach tourists about traditional fishing culture.
