Just like Children's Day, Friendship Day is celebrated on different dates. Monday, 4 April 2016 is International Friendship Day in Singapore. Celebrated in schools, it is a day dedicated to the understanding of Singapore's relations with neighbouring countries and beyond. The aim of this day is to increase awareness amongst the students of the muti-geographical and political environment that Singapore is in.
It is important for us to be aware and treat each other respectfully. We need keep an open mind for different ideas and interactions so that Singapore can continue to grow in her success as a nation. We need to encourage and nurture the spirit of friendship and collaboration among people of different races and cultures.
Students are encouraged to come dressed in national costumes from other countries. This allows the students to experience the differences in culture and dressing. Some schools will also display the national flags of countries. It will be such a colourful and fun day in school!
Schools will set aside time to commerate this day. So, what other activities does the schools organize?
Events such as a special assembly or a short play is usually included. Other activities includes special lessons about international relations may also be held. Through these, students gain an awareness on how important friendship can be forged and fostered among countries. It also highlights how crucial it is to build strong and close ties with other countries.
Sometimes international students are given the opportunity to share their experiences. What do they find interesting about Singapore, their personal experience about living in Singapore and what they like about their Singapore friends.
Cultural games cal also be organised by the school as well. Some other activities includes tryng on different national costumes and learning common phrases of another lanugage. Students will better understand the different cultures and practices of these countries through these hands-on activities.
Last but not least, this is a chance to not wear the usual school uniform and have some fun while learning more about other cultures and countries!
